Movie Review: The Edge of Seventeen (2017)

Movie Review: The Edge of Seventeen (2017) seen in theatres and on DVD

Comedy Drama: some scenes may be unsuitable for young children: language sexual content, mature themes

In my personal opinion, this movie is just the perfect balance between rom com and coming of age. These are two movie genres I prefer. While the beginning of the movie was sad, the rest of the movie is good aa it deals with the normal challenges teenagers would face, (first relationships, fitting in, Etc,) and in this movie’s case dealing with loss at a young age. I think this movie’s primary message is that “you are who you are,” no matter where you came from or what you had to deal with. The movie’s opening shows that Haliee Steinfeld’s character wasn’t exactly the most popular while her brother got all the attention and respect therefore labelling her as an outcast among her peers. The one thing I have to sort of take issue with is Woody Harrelson’s character who was supposed to be a teacher. However, he was more of a father figure to her and she confided in him. I would think someone her age should interact with people her own age but this is just my opinion.

The movie also presents scenario that I think most teenagers face; knowing who your real friends are. I don’t agree with her friend sleeping with her brother while she was drunk and had passed out on the floor. In my opinion, this is the ultimate in disrespect especially since her brother wasn’t that nice to her in the movie. I would think her friend should have really supported her and this to me is a classic example of another movie title, (one which I haven’t seen yet,) called “sleeping with the enemy.” This title describes what caused the problem between the two friends and anyone who has seen this movie will notice that despite her friend’s best efforts to apologize for what she did and to try and rekindle their friendship, their friendship has not been rekindled by the movie’s end and Hailee Steinfeld’s character pretty much comes to accept that her friend is in the relationship with her brother.

All in all, it was a good movie. Though the production company behind the movie freaks me out, (Gracie Films,) I really do like the movie and anyone who hasn’t seen the movie yet should be encouraged to do so.

Movie rating: 5 out of 10 as this was a good movie. However, anything produced by Gracie Films gives me the creeps hence the lower than desired rating.
