Movie Review: Twisters (2024) seen in theatres
Thriller: not recommended for young children; violence, some graphic images, coarse language, partial scenes of endangerment involving young children, scenes of poverty
This movie is a sequel to the 1996 movie of the same name which sees a team of storm chasers unite to stop ongoing tornadoes in Oklahoma.
The movie opens with a group of people in their mid 20’s who are employed to track and stop tornadoes. As they get caught in a tornado, several of them are swept up in it leaving only two that survive. The scene then cuts to five years later where the surviving woman named Kate is now a meteorologist. She gets a visit from the surviving male who convinces her to track tornadoes again. Kate is shown to be apprehensive at first but soon changes her mind and joins him and his team to try and stop the impending tornadoes. The rival storm chaser, (played by Glen Powell,) is shown to be arrogant and less afraid of tornadoes and is seen making light of them by approaching them head on while Kate and the other guy, (whose name I don’t know,) appear to be cautious towards them. His demeanor changes when a tornado hits during a rodeo that he is attending with Kate which obviously cancels out the event and leaves debris all around the site and several people attempt to evade it with only a young child and her mother surviving. The film ends with the team attempting to track and stop the most violent storm yet in Oklahoma, one which destroys half the town and interrupts a children’s baseball game and destroys a movie theatre with the roof collapsing and the screen itself getting caught in the tornado as well as numerous rows of seats and people hiding under them being caught in the crossfire. With time being of the essence, will the team be able to stop the massive tornado?
Though this is not my type of movie, I did really enjoy it. Even though the genre of this movie didn’t call for it, I find it hard to believe there was no romantic scenes, especially since the man who was voted “Sexiest man alive” by local magazines this year was in the movie. Also, being the type of man I am, I have to say that my favourite character was Kate as she was very attractive.
One thing I will give this movie credit for is showing me how some people really do have it bad and suffer in these circumstances when tornadoes hit. In a real life occurrence back in 2022 when derecho hit, I lost power for six days in my building. I was able to watch tv or use my computer and I couldn’t get downstairs as my elevator was down and I also couldn’t plug my phone in. The problem was that I felt like I was hard done by just because I didn’t have those luxuries. Mom told me numerous times of people who lost their cars, homes, and even their lives as a result of it. At the time, I refused to believe there was anything wrong with everybody else and only thought I was the one suffering. As I write this now, I think I may be acting a little bit selfish.
One funny thought that went through my mind during the tornado scenes was “What if I complained about what I would normally complain about in these situations if this was happening to me?” This would likely be the loss of power and being unable to do certain things all the while everybody in the movie was racing and trying to save their own lives. The funny part is that I would think that would be the last thing on anybody’s mind at that moment when there’s debris falling everywhere and a friggin tornado threatening the lives of half the world. Having said that, during the rodeo scene as literally everybody else in attendance was made aware of the tornado and seeking to take shelter, one idiot was there complaining about not getting a refund on the tickets he purchased for the rodeo because it had to be cancelled, all the while literally everybody else was attempting to evade the friggin tornado. I couldn’t believe that. There’s a tornado which everybody may die from and this moron is only worried about supposedly wasting money on tickets for the rodeo. What an idiot that guy was. This was totally selfish of him.
For a movie that supposedly wouldn’t have been one of my first choices, I really enjoyed it and maybe the next time a natural disaster strikes in real life, I can remember what I saw in this movie and realize that there are plenty of other people who have it worse than I do. My only regret for this film is that the idiot who complained about not getting refunded for his tickets never got what was coming to him….unless he was caught in the tornado himself which I don’t remember but anyway, he was a moron.
Also, we can’t forget what or in this case who the best part of this movie was…..KATE! She was hot!
