Movie Review: Grown ups (2010) seen in theatres, on DVD and on multiple streaming services
Comedy: some scenes may be unsuitable for young children; coarse language, sexual content throughout, and mature themes as well as scenes which depict death related situations and grief
Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, and Rob Schneider play a quintet of friends who reunite after thirty years apart after the death of their basketball coach and spend a weekend at their old cabin with their new families.
The movie opens with a basketball game in the year 1978 where the five friends, (who appear as children,) are on the team. After scoring the winning goal, the coach advises them to live life to the fullest just as they did in the game so that when life’s final buzzer goes off, (a death reference,) they will each have had lead successful lives.
The scene then cuts to thirty years later where each of the five friends, (now adults who are married,) find out about the coach’s passing. They reunite at his funeral where they have rented the same cabin where the team celebrated their initial victory where the new generation is taught how the older generation lived.
This is one of those movies that I do not need to watch immediately before writing a review on it as I have seen it so many times. I remember this movie well and I have to say that Adam Sandler can pretty much bring comedy to any movie I’ve seen him in. The same goes for three of the other four actors, Kevin James, Chris Rock, and David Spade. However, after his performance in this movie, I have lost all respect for Rob Schneider. His character in this movie was the depressing one which I guess is understandable since they attend a funeral but I would have thought that he would at least follow suit with the rest of them and add some humour to the otherwise somber situation. This isn’t the worst part of his character though. I can honestly say that I’m never taking relationship advice from him after seeing his wife in this movie. She was old enough to be his great grandmother while the rest of them at least had wives that were close enough to their age. It was disgusting to view and even more disgusting to think about the old bag sharing a bed with anyone let alone the guy who had a reputation for being quite the ladies man. I would think he would be the last person who would date a woman like that especially since his daughters were hot. I think that’s the joke. It’s kind of like sarcasm with irony mixed in. The same guy who would likely be critical of someone dating a woman that age in real life is the same guy who is married to one in this movie. If this isn’t bad enough, she actually has some sexual scenes in this movie in her dialogue, “you and I are going to do the back stroke tonight,” (a sexual reference used after he says he wants them to have the water bed,) as well as dressing in a cheerleading outfit and having Rob Schneider get turned on when she attempts to fix his daughter’s broken car. This may sound bad to say but I lost respect for the elderly a long time ago, (for personal reasons,) and this just made it worse to see a woman of that age engaging in sexual acts with a man who is only half her age. On a personal level, my mother is in her mid 50’s at this point and people still believe her to be my sister when we go out when in reality, we are 21 years apart and I really hate to bring this part up but I will…..she’s technically a grandmother although I should not discuss the details of her grandchild because that’s a different story. The point I’m trying to make it as old as she ever gets, she will never look elderly like Rob Schneider’s wife. While just her presence in this movie would be enough to potentially give this movie a failing review, it was very funny otherwise therefore it’s not a total fail in my eyes but her appearance and actions in this film does downgrade the rating of this film. I will say that Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade made this movie worth watching. This movie was pretty good aside from Rob Schneider’s choice in women. Once again, I will say that after seeing this movie, I’m never taking relationship advice from him. Other than that, I would recommend this movie.
