Movie Review: First Kid (1996) seen on Disney plus
Comedy; some scenes may be unsuitable for young children; coarse language, partial violence throughout , including scenes of child imprisonment
This movie follows a man named Sam Simms, (played by Sinbad,) who is a secret agent assigned to be a guardian to the president’s preteen son.
This movie had no real standout scenes and to me, it’s not worth going through a brief description of the movie because there were no good scenes. The biggest problem I had with this film is the overall treatment of Sinbad’s character throughout by literally every other character, (including the kid himself,) until he warms up to him by the end of the film. In my opinion, Sinbad didn’t fit the role because of the way he was treated. He’s supposed to be a comedian and from the beginning of this film, everybody is yelling at him, threatening him, telling him to mind his own business, blaming him for the misfortunes of the kid, ETC.
Though this will not effect the overall review of this film, one positive thing it managed to show me was that sometimes having it all is basically too much. To the kid’s credit in this movie, he is shown to basically just want a normal life and yet he feels very isolated and cannot live like a kid his own age due to his father’s status as the president. Throughout this film, he is shown to have to decline offers to hang out with kids his own age and cannot be social with them. I think this might have been the primary reason for the way he treated Sinbad early on. He was likely just venting his frustration.
In my opinion, this movie works in the opposite way I would think it would work in reality. I mean, the kid’s parents are loaded, he can have whatever he wants, his father is the president, ETC so since that is the case, the kid should have a lot of friends because they would want to benefit from all he has as well I would have thought that kids his own age might think he’s cool. Instead, everybody just makes fun of him and beats him up and unfortunately, he spends a good amount of this movie crying. This seems very appropriate since I felt like doing that the whole time I was watching this movie.
For so much of my life, I always thought you needed to be rich and famous and have access to whatever you want whenever you want to make it through life. However, this movie makes me appreciate what I do have instead of what I don’t. It taught me that having it all means having more than you know what to do with. You can have all the money and fame in the world but in turn this comes with sacrifice. You may lose opportunities to hang out with people you like and in this kid’s case, you may not even be able to see your parents or have friends, (the latter of which I don’t care about as much as I care about seeing my parents.) However, I still have respect from most of my family and what do I not have as a result? I’m not rich, I’m not famous but after seeing this movie, i think that’s ok. I would much rather have thar respect than have all the money in the world.
If anything, this movie changes my perspective on the way life works and what I think is needed for a great life. Money helps but it isn’t everything and too much of it can change who you are as a person. Despite this good life lesson that this movie taught me, it will not effect the overall review as it was still a pretty bad movie.
