Movie Review: Nanny Cam (2014) seen on Tubi
Thriller: not recommended for young children; coarse language, violence, partial scenes of child endangerment/abuse including one scene of intended abduction, mature themes including dialogue which discuss death related topics, brief sexuality and nudity
This movie follows a couple who hire a young teenage girl to babysit their daughter after the original babysitter sustains an injury while babysitting the young girl one night while also showing signs of dementia which necessitate her replacement. As the parents are reluctant to leave their daughter alone with the teenager since they do not know her well enough, they install a nanny cam to secretly view what happens in their absence. Throughout the film, the little girl takes a liking to the teenager. However, as more becomes known about the teenager, the parents find out that she is not as good as she says she is and has a dark side, one which threatens the entire family.
There were a few standout scenes in this film. The first thing I noticed, (and this is going to sound horrible to say,) is that the little girl in this film has a face made specifically for a horror movie. The little girl actually looks like the devil itself and as I watched this film, I just knew something evil was going to happen. I’m sure there would be a lot of people who disagree with me but this is just my opinion. Another trait of this little girl which would support this is her overall behaviour throughout the movie. Some of the actions that would give the implication that the teenager is not who she says she is are done in full view of the little girl. She can see and hear most things she says and yet when her parents take note of this and threaten to fire her, the little girl is shown to be opposed to this which is shown numerous times throughout the film. She even goes as far as to call her a friend and says she hates them for doing this. I suppose this could be because she’s just a little girl and maybe doesn’t know any better.
Now this is one of those movies people would generally think I like because of the attractive girl being the main character. I’m sure it would be no surprise to anyone closest to me, (more specifically mom,) if she saw the trailer of this movie or the movie itself and saw the girl in the movie. She would likely catch on right away that this is the main reason I like this movie, (because of the hot girl and the presumed sex in the film.) This has happened with a lot of movies I have seen with a girl who I believe to be hot being the main character and of course with that usually comes the inevitable sex scene which she knows I would say is my favourite part. For this movie, this assumption would be true to a point as I cannot lie, that girl is fuckin hot. However, this time I decided to challenge myself a little bit. Aside from the appearance of the hot girl, I knew there were other standout scenes that made this movie worth watching and I wanted to try and find those other scenes which along with the girl would positively boost the rating as opposed to just giving it a positive rating because of my crush on the girl, (which is something I do for almost every other movie involving a girl who I find hot.) It doesn’t matter how the rest of the movie was in most cases, if there was a hot girl in it, that movie obtained a positive rating. An example of this would be Beetlejuice. This was not my kind of movie at all. I didn’t really care for it. By all accounts, that movie should have received a negative review but then I realized that Jenna Ortega was in it and every aspect which would have given this movie a negative review otherwise was gone as her presence was enough to boost me and give that movie a passing grade despite me not caring about the rest of it. I didn’t want to make it too obvious as to why the grade for the movie in question is high. So therefore, I scraped to find any other aspect of this movie beyond the appearance of the sexy girl to help boost the rating and it wasn’t easy but hard work does pay off and I found a couple of scenes that may accomplish this.
These scenes were actually lines said in the movie which in my mind assert authority and are badass in my mind. All of these lines were said by the teenager in the movie but it really shows how dominant she is in her role.
In one scene, she is seen playing with a beach ball with the little girl outside. As she goes in the house to make them iced tea, the little girl’s original babysitter, (who is an elderly woman,) drives by and stops to say hi. The little girl is happy to see her at first but once the teenager returns outside, she drops the glasses of iced tea believing that the little girl is talking to a stranger. After the elderly woman comments on how much she misses them and how great a family they are, the teenager is shown to take offense to the comment and sees her comment as a threat. She then says this in response:
“This is my family now. You’re never getting them back. They spend every day saying how happy and relieved they are that I saved them. They can’t stand what you did to their little girl and they can’t stand you for it. You scarred that little girl for life. She is afraid of you. They also say they’re much happier with me than they are with you because I’m younger and full of life and not an old clumsy bitch who can’t even take care of herself. Now leave.”
Now I should mention that I can’t exactly remember what she said but it was pretty close to this. This entire quote, (while very similar to what she actually said in the film,) may have some added or forgotten elements to it but it was very badass.
The mother comes home as the elderly woman leaves in her car and the teenager feigns innocence saying that the elderly woman came up to her and started screaming at her and threatening her, saying how badly she wanted the family back.
In another scene, after the teenager had been invited to stay for dinner, she answers the phone so the parents don’t have to. It is the elderly woman on the other end, (as she believes that the mother hates her for what happened to the little girl in the film.) Without saying a word, the teenager listens to the apology and then utters this phrase:
“My family and I would be much better off if you were to just hurry up and die,” before disconnecting the call and dismissing the caller as telemarketers to the parents upon returning to the dining room
The teenager in this film is known for having a voice that is really deep and therefore .she sounds much more mature than she is. However, in each of these scenes, she never raises her voice and stays calm despite being in a confrontation. One thing I like about her is that despite how calm she is, the argument never lasts beyond her making her first point and this to me adds an element of evilness to her character.
This is basically it in terms of scenes which would boost the rating of the film. However, like I have done every other time, I cannot forget to add what everybody including myself knows deep down is the reason as to why I like this movie….THE GIRL WAS FUCKIN HOT! To be honest, I’ve never been a fan of elderly people anyway so to me, it’s a no brainer as to who I believe should be preferred to watch the little girl and that is her. I think anybody who would need to choose between an old babysitter and a hot one would choose the hot one.
Like it always does for me, this film ended with me wishing that the hot girl would be assigned to help me in my everyday life, (hanging out with me, bathing me, getting me dressed in the morning but most of all, tucking me in at night and not reading me a bedtime story or singing me a lullaby and reassuring me that my mommy will be home soon, but tucking herself in as well and telling me that my home is her home, that my bed is her bed…..if you know what I mean.
I just realized that this has been my longest review since I started writing these reviews. This is something I’m very proud of. Another thing I’m very proud of is to have seen this movie because of the great dialogue within it as well as the good stuff being in it as well.
I’m glad to be back on the train of being able to give movie reviews that are positive rather than negative. For obvious reasons, I really enjoyed this movie.
Movie rating: 10 out of 10
Next movie review TBD although it will be something on Netflix
