Movie Review: Woman Of The Year (2024) seen in theatres
Thriller/Drama: not recommended for young children; coarse language, sexual dialogue throughout, including scenes portraying homosexuality, and physical abuse against woman, including scenes of sexual abuse and one scene which suggests rape.
This movie follows a man who is an aspiring photographer who routinely charms women by taking photographs of them before killing them in various ways. Meanwhile, a young woman, (played by Anna Kendrick,) is selected to be a contestant on the game show, “The Dating Game,” with the man being one of her potential selections to become Mr. Right.
I will give this movie credit where it is due. Most movies don’t accomplish what this one did and this was to leave me on the edge of my seat and wish for the villain to get his comeuppance. I can honestly say that I have never seen a movie that portrays this much violence against women than this one did. What gets me is the fact that the guy doesn’t seem to even have a reason to do this for much of the film. There is a possible reason as to why this is which is explored about halfway through though. He is seen working in an office during a flashback scene, (which this movie was for the most part as about half to three quarters of it was flashbacks of him targeting one female victim after another in various cities.) Though it’s never officially confirmed, he is presumed to be homosexual which is shown in a scene where he asks another man to join him on the beach after work, to which the man he replies that he cannot due to having to stay late. At this point in the film, he had already started murdering various women and this only seemed to make him go crazy even more after being shut down by a guy he likes.
Another thing I have to give this movie a thumbs down for is the lack of interaction between him and Anna Kendrick given that she was the main star first of all and also the fact that the trailer for this movie suggests that she was the one being harassed and stalked throughout. Despite this, other than a verbal exchange between him and her as well as a threat for violence, she pretty much got off without any damage. However, there was another girl who was beaten within an inch of her life and was shown to be possibly raped by this man. If anything she should have been the lead female role in this movie as more happened to her than Anna Kendrick. Also, flashbacks showed at least two or three other women, (still not Anna Kendrick,) getting the same treatment from him throughout the movie. He starts by charming them and then asks to take a picture before brutally murdering them. I honestly don’t know what the point was of having Anna Kendrick be the main character if she only contributed a little bit to the main plot. If I was writing this movie, (and this is actually what I thought would happen having seen the trailer,) is for Anna Kendrick to pick him as the winner of the show and then start a relationship with him that starts off well only for it to dissolve into chaos once he shows her an evil side of him, thus creating the issue for the movie. This is seen in a lot of movies I’ve seen already so I think the reason they didn’t do this was because of how predictable it would be.
However, this movie did have some good points. Those good points come in the form of the main female actresses who I once again find attractive. There was the casting of Anna Kendrick who is a real eye turner to me and then there was the girl he kidnapped in the flashback that was really hot as well. If Anna Kendrick wants to go back on “The Dating Game,” I wouldn’t mind if she chose me. Obviously I would treat her better than he did. Also, anytime the girl he kidnaps, (who is shown to be broke and homeless before having any contact with him,) needs a place to stay, she can always come to my place. Once again, my admiration for hot females helped boost this rating from what would have been a complete 0 otherwise due to the actions of the man in the movie. This movie would be recommended to anybody who enjoys looking at females….so pretty much anybody who is single and is looking to find a girlfriend.
Movie rating: 8 out of 10
