Movie Review: Ted 2 (2015)

Movie Review: Ted 2 (2015) seen in theatres and on Netflix

Comedy: not recommended for young children; coarse language, violence, sexual content, drug use throughout, including one scene which depicts a domestic dispute

Everyone’s favourite foul mouthed pot smoking teddy bear named Ted returns for a sequel to his 2012 comedy which sees him attempt to conceive a child with his human girlfriend. In order to do this, Ted must prove that he is legally a human being and not property in court in order to prove he is a legitimate and caring parent.

This is one of those sequels that plays off the cliche of “Sequel is never better than the original.” I have to say that when it comes to the two movies, Ted and Ted 2, they are exact opposites in terms of quality and hence not what I was expecting. The first one was so good but this one was plain stupid. I mean, it’s obvious just by looking at Ted that he is not human but a teddy bear. This makes for a very predictable conflict when the judge in the movie obviously dismisses Ted’s case and he must spend the rest of the movie using every trick in the book to prove that he’s human. Well, something I noticed is that he is still not a human at the end of this movie. However, through some underhanded means, (I forget what actually happens in the movie,) he is granted custody despite not proving that he’s a human. This makes the plot of this movie even more ridiculous. It was bad enough when a teddy bear, (who let’s not forget wasn’t human in the first movie either,) engaged in human conversations, let alone had sex and smoked drugs. Now in the second movie, he wants to have a baby? This wasn’t worth watching at all. It was obvious from the start of this movie that Ted would never be seen as a human unless a genie magically appeared and turned him into Seth Macfarlane himself or maybe even a live version of Peter Griffin but it never happened. As far as I’m concerned teddy bears cannot conceive children. Therefore the real question I have is why did the judge in this movie grant Ted the ability to have children being that he’s not human? At least this would have made the ending realistic if they were to say something like, “I’m sorry sir but have you looked in the mirror lately? “You’re not fit to be a father because you’re not fit to be a human being as you are a teddy bear.” Sad as this may be for fans of “Family Guy” to hear, it would have made more sense. I think the writers didn’t want to upset fans of the first movie and wanted to present a happy ending. Well sometimes logic has to come first and I’m sorry but this movie defies common sense. It was stupid from start to finish and honestly, it was a waste of a movie.
