What is good about having a pet?

I’m not much of an animal person. This definitely applies to birds. However, if I had to choose, my favourite animals and the only ones I would ever want to have as pets would be cats and dogs. Growing up, I had times where I was one of the proud owners of both of these animals. Some we unfortunately lost to death but in the case of the dog, my mother chose to give her away as she found it hard to care for her. This was unfortunate as those cats and dogs felt like part of the family. The dog had a special connection with all of us and when she heard us come in the door, she would greet us and when we were gone, she would sleep in our rooms as a sign of missing us. The sad part is that I was allergic to both cats and dogs which is why we had to be careful which ones we chose to take. However, through my experience of owning both of these animals growing up, I would have to say that the best part about having a pet is the fact that they’re more than just that, a pet, (at least as far as I was concerned.) They loved us and were a big part of our lives growing up. It was almost like having another family member who was willing to do anything to help us and make us happy. I know that at the time of this writing, my mother has a cat who I know she loves and would not give up for anything. They have the strongest connection with each other and I think my mother actually sees the cat as one of us from back when we were little. Once again, I will say that when it comes to cats and dogs, they are treated by me just as I would treat any human member of my family. Having said all of this, I cannot have pets in my building as it is not pet friendly. Though this is unfortunate, I can look back on all the wonderful memories I had with the ones I was part owner to growing up.
