Movie Review: Y2K (2024)

Movie Review: Y2K (2024) seen in theatres

Horror/sci fi: not recommended for young children; coarse language, graphic violence, some gory scenes, brief nudity, brief sexuality including dialogue and implications, minor drug use, scenes of alcohol consumption, some emotional scenes resulting from death

This movie follows a group of teenagers who plan a party on New Year’s Eve 1999 which takes a horrific turn when a robot built from a computer bug begins murdering the teenagers one by one after the clock strikes midnight. They must band together to uncover the mystery assailant before time runs out and the unknown entity puts an end to all humanity

As far as this movie is concerned, on paper it seemed like a love hate type movie. This is because I’ve never been a fan of science fiction but at the same time, I’ve seen and enjoyed a lot of movies that incorporate parties thrown by teenagers. With those kinds of movies, there’s bound to be a lot of sex and hot girls and this movie was no exception. So if anybody wonders whether this was a love or hate kind of movie, it was definitely a movie that I loved. Now that I think about it, there have been a few movies with some sci fi elements that I’ve enjoyed, none of which I can name off the top of my head but for various reasons, this movie was great.

One thing I have to give this movie credit for is it’s use of 90’s merchandise, songs, movies and items. The 90’s is very well represented throughout this movie with things such as desktop computers, dial up internet, video stores, VHS tapes, there were some songs that I remember from the 90’s and perhaps the best of all, the type of women that were thought to be hot in that decade. I was born in the year 1990 and one character in particular was one that I would ask mom to let babysit me over and over again until she became part of the family. Obviously I would have been too young to date her and in reality, I hated being left with babysitters when I was younger. However, this would not be the case if she was around back then and she looked like she did. This character was Laura, (played by Rachel Zegler.) Anyway, I was sitting in the theatre holding a pack of gummy bears. In her first scene in the movie, I was so turned on by her that I dropped half of my gummy bears on the floor. I continued to focus intently on her every time she appeared hoping that she would not be one of the ones who dies in the movie. You know they say the best movies are the one that get people talking. Well, this movie not only had me doing that but also I had moments where I thought she was in front of me and I would lose my trend of thought and have trouble focusing on what I was doing at that moment and I also daydreamed while I was on the phone after the movie thinking she was in my presence which would have been very welcome if it was the case. Even at this moment, I still believe she is in my presence and I’m actually finding it hard to focus on writing this.

The negative points about this movie are very minimal. However, one small thing I have to take issue with is the lack of sex within it as this movie has presented itself as one where sex would be a common occurrence, (especially with someone as hot as Laura.) However, this movie did not really live up to the hype and did not live up to my expectations after I had watched the preview and understood what it was about. I find this movie focused more on the sci fi aspect of the movie rather than the party. Maybe that was the point of it but this was something I noticed. Despite this one small thing, the rest of this movie was great and I would definitely recommend it.

Movie review: 10 out of 10

Next movie review: Something on DVD. Either “Say it isn’t so” (2001) or “A Guy Thing” (2003) Both movies will be reviewed in the gap between Boxing day and New Year’s Day.

As I am not sure if I will be doing another movie review before Christmas, I want to take this opportunity to wish everybody a very merry Christmas. Reviews will continue in the days between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. However, as I will likely be busy until after Christmas at this point, this may be my last review until after Christmas.

Please note: As much as this may be the last review I do until after Christmas, there’s also as much of a chance that it won’t be if I end up watching another movie on Christmas Eve night or Christmas Day. In fact, I actually made a mistake as I will be doing another review on Christmas night as I’m set to see a movie on Christmas Day. While the next two reviews will be the two aforementioned movies that I will watch at home at some point, the next movie I’m scheduled to watch for sure is “Baby girl.” (2024) To make it easy, I will just say I don’t know when I will do another review since it is almost Christmas.

Once again, Merry Christmas everybody!
