Write about your approach to budgeting.

Well there was a time when a dollar made was a dollar spent no matter how I earned it be it through family members or even my ODSP cheque. I had no idea what it meant to save money for when I needed it and any amount of money I had was spent. This was really made apparent as a child and it used to upset my father, my mother not so much but he used to tell me that he was upset at the idea of me always needing to spend money rather than save it. Well fast forward about 20 years later and for personal reasons, I don’t care what my father thinks as I have not seen him in years and I view my stepfather as the closest thing I have to a father. As for my real one, I might never see him again but I don’t miss him or care what he’s doing. I will always be close to my mother though as made apparent through my countless previous blogs which praise her to no end. I think I’m getting off topic though. This is not about my family life, it’s about my spending habits and as I briefly mentioned before, part of my issues as a child as it pertained to money carried over to when I had my first apartment after moving out on my own. As soon as I got my cheque, I would spend stupidly on going to the movies twice a week, (this was before I had the site hence it was before I started reviewing movies,) and to restaurants, ETC. I found myself nearly bankrupt by the end of the first week of the month in some cases. Well fast forward about 10 years later and I’ve moved twice since then but one thing that has gotten better is my approach to spending. After my bills are paid, I try my best not to spend money or go out nearly as much as I used to since this is where most of money went. I enjoy my house more often these days and for what it’s worth, my bank account for the most part holds up pretty well. Having said that, I’m still not a millionaire but I have much more money than I used to. It’s like my mother used to say….money doesn’t grow on trees but trust me when I say this, I know a lot of people including myself wished it did but it doesn’t. This is why we need to save as much as we can. I’ve gone from being a stupid spender to a smart saver and I have to say that my life is better because of this.
