Movie Review: Last Breath (2025) seen in theatres
Thriller/Drama: not recommended for young children; mild coarse language, strong emotional scenes, scenes which depict possible death from drowning, scenes which deal with coping through natural disasters, extreme suspenseful scenes, scenes discussing possible death, brief romantic implications
Woody Harrelson stars in this thriller/drama which tells the true story of a first time diver who gets trapped millions of feet below the surface of the sea after a storm results in a power outage within the ship forcing the entire crew to take drastic measures to save the diver before it’s too late
Let me say first of that this movie was way outside of my preferred genre. I’ve never willingly cared about movies which take place under the sea/sci fi elements, ETC. This was one of those movies that I thought I would give a try as I’ve been told to be adventurous through other aspects of my life, (mostly as it pertains to my eating habits.) Now most of the other aspects of my life don’t usually cost an arm and a leg to partake in. I went into seeing this movie not expecting to get anything out of it particularly due to my lack of knowledge on how things at sea work. I can safely say that in my 35 years, I’ve never come close to taking a job at sea with the main reason for this being that most aspects of this make me sick to think about. I can’t swim without fear of drowning and even the atmosphere at any Red Lobster restaurant is enough to gross me out as they primarily serve fish. Anyway, like my previous review on “Paddington in Peru,” this movie was just basically seen as a time saver and I really didn’t think I would get anything noteworthy out of it therefore it was seen as a waste of money to see initially. However, just like “Paddington in Peru,” I was glad I gave this movie a chance. In the beginning, there were many scenes where I actually forgot it was just a movie and thought I was actually the one being shipped off to sea. I had to keep telling myself that it was just a movie and that what I was seeing did not effect me at all. Most people would probably believe I shouldn’t see this movie as it served to bother me enough and they would be right in assuming this. I choose to see things in a different way though. I believe that if I can forget that it’s a movie and believe that it pertains to me somehow, it’s one that I’m right into. Let me put this into perspective. I’ve been accused of going to movies just for the enjoyment of the popcorn by those closest to me. Most times, I did not even know or care what the movie I was seeing was about and afterwards, I could not even tell anyone what it was about as I had spent the entirety of the film in question gorging myself in popcorn. This was well before I started writing these reviews. These days, going to a movie and not knowing what it’s about before I see it wouldn’t work because I wouldn’t be able to review it properly on the site. Well, truth be told this time around, I was so invested in this movie that I actually forgot I had popcorn and a drink. This just goes to show how good this movie was. If I can forget about my popcorn long enough to get lost in a movie and wonder what will happen next and feel as though I’m basically in it, you should know that I enjoyed it. The thing I think I loved about it most is the incorporation of a number of genres within the movie. This is especially since some of those genres would not fit into this movie based on the trailer for it and the poster for it. There’s a bit of a romantic undertone while it was also able to sneak in a thrilling aspect and sci-fi element while adding dramatic undertones as well. Pretty much, though this movie is listed as just a thriller/drama, it can also be seen as mildly romantic particularly in the beginning and the end while having edge of your seat implications throughout. This movie does not limit itself to it’s intended genre. Despite this, it’s still not recommended for children. This is one aspect this movie failed to incorporate….an animated/cartoon ETC type movie geared towards younger children. However, one thing it did accomplish was being able to intrigue me enough to where I got lost in the storyline. This is something that’s hard to do and if you don’t believe me, ask anyone I know and I’m sure they will tell you the same thing. This movie managed to accomplish this. I really enjoyed it even though I did not think I would. Maybe this just goes to show that I need to give things a chance before putting them down and saying that it’s no good/that I’m not going to like it, ETC. This is something I really did like.
