Tagline: It was the best of times and the worst of times all in one night. There was love, hate and sadness. It was crazy. Oh what a night
Our story begins sometime after my brother was arrested for unintentionally causing mom’s death. Even though Megan and I have maintained a positive relationship, I am unable to fully be happy and she cannot believe she made what she considers to be the biggest mistake of her life by entering a relationship with someone who albeit unintentionally, commits a murder. She has spent the majority of time that has passed attempting to make ur for her mistake by getting intimate with me every chance she gets. Even though this means we’re getting along now, there is a bigger conflict to be dealt with. Our wedding is coming up and though we should be planning for the special occasion, we also have to plan for a much more unpleasant one….mom’s funeral. We cannot agree on a date as we’re unsure of what to do first. Should it be our wedding or mom’s funeral? This is where our story begins.
Sins of The Brother Chapter 2 By Jefferson Bert
The story begins one morning as Megan has prepared a special breakfast for me in an attempt to win back my good graces after putting me through hell for a long time as she entered into a relationship with my brother. Also she knows that I have been dealing with a lot recently given the situation with him. She makes me my favorite breakfast consisting of pancakes and bacon.
“You know, forgive me for saying this. I don’t want to be rude but I’m not that hungry.” I say
Megan becomes frustrated. “Oh come on. I worked really hard on this. Please try to eat at least some the food I made.” she said
Not wanting anymore problems than there have already been, I agree to.
“You know I’m really looking forward to a couple of weeks from now where you can once again become my wife. I love you so much.” I said
“I know but there’s something else we need to discuss as well. I didn’t want to bring this up but…..I stop her before she can finish
“Do not tell me you’re pregnant!” I said. This is the kind of this a woman tells her husband the morning after they have conceived. Well to be honest, I can’t deal with this right now…..she stops me before I can finish
“No I’m not pregnant. I meant your mom’s funeral.” she said
“What about it?” I ask
Well, I would like to get it done before we get married. This way we can move on with our lives knowing she is happy.” said Megan
“No I think we should do it after.” I insist. I need the fun of the wedding. It will help me get over my grief.”
“Well, it’s just that I don’t want to finish our wedding and then have to reopen old wounds by planning a funeral.” she said
“You can’t reopen wounds that never close to begin with.” I say. Mom’s death will haunt me whether we get married tomorrow or 50 years from now. Do you not remember what I said about never letting mom go no matter how old I get?” I say
“Well ok what do you think she will say if she was here right now?” asks Megan
“Do me a favour and don’t play that card with me. I don’t want to think about what mom would say given the fact that she’s not here and can’t exactly say it. Having said that, I always knew that if I ever got married, I would want her to be present. There’s no reason why that has to change just because of her death. I think I would be insulting her if she wasn’t a part of the ceremony.” I say
Megan gasps and give a confused look. “What are you talking about? Obviously she can never be part of anything. Not our wedding. Not a grandparent to our children because she’s not alive anymore. I know this is hard to accept but it’s true. Now do you want to marry me or not?” Megan asks impatiently
“Oh that’s where you’re wrong. You’re right about one thing though. She’ll be long gone by the time we have kids but this wedding would be the perfect way for her to go out. I always knew this and mom told me hundreds of times how when she died, she wanted to make sure I was in good hands. Well now she can. She always knew how great you were to me and this wedding is the perfect send off. She can go peacefully now having been there to witness my greatest achievement since becoming a writer…getting married. This is something I know mom wouldn’t miss for the world.” I say
“Yes but she can’t be there. You’re just in denial of her death. If you can’t get over that, we will never be able to move on hence there’s no sense in us getting married.” Megan scolds
“You’re not listening to me. We need to have a funeral and a wedding right?” I said
“Yes.” said Megan
“Well, it’s a matter of common sense. Once the funeral happens, mom can’t be there but what if we were to combine the two parties. A wedding and a funeral in the same place at the same time? We know where mom is going and I’m reluctantly willing to accept that but there’s no reason why she can’t make a stop along the way to ensure I’m happy before she leaves.” I say
So what are we supposed to do? Bring the entire casket to the wedding ceremony?” Megan asks sarcastically.
“That’s exactly what we’re supposed to do and we can have it opened during the ceremony so it will just be like mom is sleeping. You know how much mom loved to sleep when she was alive.” I say excitedly
“Well even though this makes no sense. I could say that I no longer want to get married to you but I am still happy so I guess that is an option.” Megan says
Through countless arrangements and phone calls not to mention the cost, we are able to pull the wedding/funeral off. There was a place for the priest and mom’s casket stayed open on Megan’s side of the altar. I look into the casket and say to mom, “It’s just like you’re Megan’s maid of honor and you have the best seat in the house to see your boy run off into the sunset with the girl of his dreams. Doesn’t she look beautiful?” I ask mom
With that, the wedding takes place as any wedding would with the priest giving his normal speech of “Dearly Beloved…ETC. Everything seems to be going great until we get an unlikely visitor. Just as the priest asks if anybody objects, a child appears in the church and says ‘I OBJECT!”
As I did not know who the child was at first, I made a sarcastic comment, “These parents today letting their kids do whatever they want. “Listen kid, we’re in the middle of a wedding and a funeral and this is a private ceremony. Please leave.”
“You don’t know who I am do you?” he asks
“No I don’t but I believe you’re a trespasser. Do you need a phone to call your parents?” I ask
The child motions to the door. “Do you recognize him?” he asks
Just then my brother who I had not seen in years pops up.
‘Is that really you?” I ask
“Yes it’s me.” he says
“What are you doing here?” I ask
“Well I was sent here by our other brother to get back who he believes is his bride and stop her from marrying you which would be the biggest mistake of your life.” he said You also don’t know who this do you?” he asks
“No I don’t.” I reply
“He’s the nephew you’ve neglected his whole life and the grandson your mother, that’s right your mother because I hate her has neglected her whole wife.” my brother said
Now getting frustrated, “Tell your son and my nephew to step outside so I can kick his father’s ass. You don’t bad mouth mom in my presence. This didn’t work when she was alive and it’s not going to work now but if you don’t watch yourself, your son is going to have to visit you in the hospital.” I threaten.
Not wanting to ruin the festivities, Megan tries to step in. “If you guys have issues, save it for later. This is supposed to be a happy time.” she says.
“Oh it will be as soon as your marry my other brother. Not the one with no legs. Do you not see how my other brother is so much better for you than this asshole?” he asks
“Hey don’t talk to her like that.” I say.
Now completely upset, I throw a punch at my brother. “Oh yeah, you want to go?” he says. The two of us begin brawling throughout the church. After knocking him out with a punch and busting him open, the wedding resumes.
‘Ok now where were we?” I ask
“You may now kiss the bride.” The priest says
“Yeah do you hear that asshole? I can kiss the bride because she’s my wife not yours, not my nephew’s and not my other brother’s. Just go away and leave us alone.” I say.
As Megan and I walk down the aisle, my bgrother trips me and I fall against a row of benches knocking me unconscious.
This is your new husband?” he asks in amazement. Let’s see how much you love him when you can no longer see him anymore. I’m bringing him back with me. You stay right here and my other brother will marry you the right way. If you don’t, I will harm him. I promise you that.” he threatens
With that, my brother places me in the back of his car and drives off with me leaving Megan to fend for herself.
