Megan’s Boy Chapter 4: Nothing Lasts Forever By Jefferson Bert

Tagline: Even the closest of relationships can’t battle time

Our story begins a month after the court case involving me either staying permanently with mom or Megan has concluded and a definitive verdict has been reached. Over the past month as I have been enjoying the perks I once had a child before I moved out on my own and eventually met Megan , she has kept to her word that she would give us our space. At this point, I have not heard from her or seen her since the court hearing. Just like mom though, unfortunately she couldn’t leave well enough alone and eventually tried to get me back. The only difference is the fact that mom’s attempt was welcomed by me where Megan’s wasn’t. Things had been so peaceful in my life and I had mom to thank for that. However, as it is in life, all good things must come to an end. When Megan finally worked up the nerve to look me up after an extended absence, I knew mom and I would be in yet another battle. This is where our story begins.

Megan’s Boy Chapter 4: Nothing Lasts Forever By Jefferson Bert

Our story begins one morning as mom and I are in the kitchen making breakfast. Though I have been grateful for having spent so much time with mom recently, I still miss Megan somewhat despite mom’s objections to her.

“I wonder how Megan is doing.” I say as mom begins setting the table for breakfast.

This line temporarily made mom think of my teenage years and therefore she responded a bit abruptly. “Jefferson don’t start. This is not going to be like it was during your teenage years. You’re much older now so I would expect you to know better. Megan is gone and you need to forget about her. At my age, I can’t deal with your problems with girls like I used to be able to when I was younger. Let her go now or you and I are going to have problems. I mean it.” mom said.

“I’m sorry mom but is it ok if I still talk to her once in a while?” I reply.

“As long as this is what makes you happy and I don’t want to hear any of the nonsense that came out of your mouth during your teenage years with that other girl whose name I have forgotten. What is it again?” mom asked.

“You know I can’t even remember myself.” I replied

“Yeah right. I’m sure you remember and you just don’t want to admit it. You know what? It’s probably for the best if you don’t bring her up anyway.” mom said.

One afternoon mom went grocery shopping while I stayed home alone. I got a call on my phone and it was Megan.

“I know I said I would stay away but you know what? Have you ever heard of the theory that a guy and a girl can break up and still be friends?” Megan asked.

“Yes I’ve heard of that.” I reply.

“Well I don’t want us to be those people who were once a couple who can’t stand each other. After all we did have some good times together and I’ve missed you like crazy this past few weeks. Do you think your mom would be ok if I came over to visit? Maybe I can help her start dinner or something and we can watch tv.” she suggested.

There was a long pause on my end before I responded as I was trying to let her down easy as I knew mom did not want her around. “Well I don’t want to put you out. After all you’ve probably forgotten about me…..I hear the door bell ring. I have to go. I’ll call you later.” I say before hanging up the phone.

I answer the door to find that it’s Megan. “Did you think I was asking to come over?” she asks.

“Ok but just for a few minutes and then you have to leave. Mom should be back anytime now but you’re welcome to stay until she’s on her way back.” I reply.

“So how have you been doing these past few weeks?” I ask.

I get no response. She approaches me and kisses me on the lips. “I want you back and I won’t take no for an answer this time. Admit it, you miss me too. I can see it in your eyes. The only reason you’re making me leave is because your mom doesn’t like me. Well you know what? I don’t care. I won’t stop until I get you back and if that means me knocking at your door every god damn day or calling your phone until you accept me back in your life, then that’s what’s going to happen. Face it. Your life is simply not your mother’s decision anymore but if she loves you like I know she does, she will accept me.” Megan said.

I fail to respond right away as I suddenly begin to have flashbacks of the good times we had together. “Well I do really miss you and you’re right when you say I won’t ever find anyone better. Ok I will agree to give you another chance but I need a favor from you. I still have to convince mom to allow me to take you back so we have to move really slowly and maybe take it easy on the intimacy until she is on board with this.” I say.

Megan laughs. This is another thing that’s not your mom’s decision or yours to make either. Remember that this relationship isn’t just about what you want. It’s a two way street. So if I want to speed things up with you, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.” she replies.

“Why don’t we start with dinner? Then maybe we can go on a few dates.” I suggest

Is that what you want to do? I don’t care what you want to do. Here’s what I want to do.” Megan said.

The next thing I know Megan and I are getting intimate in my bedroom in the basement. “This isn’t exactly taking it easy.” I say in the heat of passion.

“Enough of that crap. I know you really love me so stop being such an obedient momma’s boy.” she said.

“Good point.” I say as we begin getting intimate again

“Jefferson I’m home.” mom yells from upstairs.

“Ok you need to hide in the closet.” I say.

Megan laughs. “Are you a fuckin teenager? I’m not hiding in the god damn closet. I’ll go upstairs right now and talk to your mom myself.” she says

“I just don’t want to get into trouble and I don’t want you to get in trouble.” I say.

“I won’t get in trouble and neither will you. Remember that what we do is our decision.” Megan replies.

“Jefferson are you ok?” mom asks

Just then Megan appears outside the room. “Yes he’s ok.” she says

“What the fuck are you doing in my house getting intimate with my fuckin son? Get the fuck out of here. You’re not starting this BS with me. You know we had a deal and you need to stick with it.” mom said.

“Well I know something you don’t know. I did some research and it turns out that there’s something you’ve been hiding from us about your condition.” Megan said

“What are you talking about?” mom asked.

“Where did you just come back from?” Megan asked

“I’m here picking up my son for a doctor’s appointment and I had a grocery delivery just now.” mom replied.

“What appointment mom? I don’t have an appointment and you just came from the grocery store.” I say.

“Oh my god. You have dementia. You can’t remember things that you just did. Now I may not be a psychologist but it appears that your condition would limit your ability to properly look after Jefferson. Don’t you want what’s best for him?” Megan asks

Just then I remember something that supports Megan’s point. “Come to think of it, I did notice something strange. You were cooking breakfast at 2:30 in the afternoon. Maybe this means you can’t tell time either.” I say.

“No I just slept in because I was up late.” mom replied

“it was still light out when you went to bed. You crashed right after supper.” I say

“It’s time for me to take care of you.” Megan said. Don’t worry. Your mother is still your mother even if she has dementia.” she said

“As hard as it is for me to admit, I think you’re right baby. I’ll make you a deal. If you can guarantee that I can still have a relationship with her, I’ll allow you to care for me from now on because I agree that mom is not herself mentally right now.” I say

“Agreed. Right now though we need to find her a good nursing home to stay at and I promise you can see her every single day.” Megan said

“I think it’s time for me to pass you off to someone who is able to take care of you just as good as I have. Mark my words. This isn’t the end. You’ll still see me as much as you want. I still love you. It’s just time for the burden of me constantly taking care of you to be taken off of me. Please don’t be upset. We knew this day was coming and you have a great girl who loves you so much and would do anything for you to take care of you going forward. Don’t think of this as a negative thing. It’s an adventure. One that we will take together.” mom said.

As luck would have it, it turns out my brother Brad is working at a nearby nursing home so mom was admitted into that nursing home. As for me, well I would be lying if I didn’t get emotional at the thought of my mother becoming less capable due to her age and health issues than she’s ever been. I knew this was going to take some getting used to but with Megan’s help and mom’s reassurance, I know I will be able to get through it.

The End
