The events in this book will take place a week after Jefferson’s birthday where he has now been happily married to Megan for a month, (with the wedding having taken place at the end of the previous book titled “Bringing Megan Home,) They have initially struggled financially since the wedding due to the high cost of the event to the point where they are unable to afford take out one night when Megan doesn’t feel like cooking dinner. However, Jefferson finds a promotion being held at the pizza place where they frequently order. It’s called “The Birthday Meal Deal,” where any customer can obtain a free meal along with a side and drink of their choice for free if they order on their actual birthday. Unfortunately, Jefferson misreads the promotion and goes to the restaurant hoping to take advantage of the deal. He becomes upset when the store manager denies him the offer as his birthday was a week ago. This causes a huge fight where the store manager is assaulted in a fit of rage by Jefferson who threatens to have the restaurant shut down if he doesn’t comply. Things are made worse when the customer in line behind him is granted the deal as it is his actual birthday. Despite rules being made against the store serving him again along with several police threats, (which transition into police involvement,) Jefferson ends up getting his way thanks to the police officer siding with him as he believes Jefferson was treated unfairly due to him being physically disabled. Though the order is listed as a one time only purchase, Jefferson resolves to go one step further and say that he and Megan should be granted the same deal anytime they want as they have been good customers to the store prior to the incident occurring. Though this is disputed by the officer initially citing unfairness to other customers, he eventually forces the manager to grant the deal as Jefferson had sustained a bad cut during the fight which would have forced the restaurant to close down otherwise.
It’s not long before Jefferson and Megan giving birth makes news headlines as they are the first disabled couple to have given birth naturally. As the mayor of the town then realizes that Jefferson and Megan need all the money they can get to support their daughter, he offers Jefferson his place as mayor for a job as he is getting close to retirement anyway with his last official order of business being that Jefferson and Megan make all the rules and that they receive access to all the money in the world.
Though Megan is skeptical with this at first as she doesn’t think it’s fair to everybody else, she changes her tune when Jefferson buys her extremely expensive jewelry and the mayor extends on his initial rule by saying that Megan has been appointed manager of the grocery store she currently works at and is able to name the prices of all the items in the store. Together, the two of them go on a power trip which causes them to go from being the most inspirational couple to the most hated couple in town.
