Movie Review: Despicable Me 4 (2024)

Movie Review: Despicable Me 4: seen in theatres

Animated comedy; suitable for all ages, cartoon violence

This movie is the fourth installment of the “Despicable Me” series which sees Gru, (played by Steve Carell,) needing to relocate his family after they are tracked down by Maxime, (played by Will Ferrell,) who seeks revenge for a rivalry the two engaged in during their days in high school.

The movie opens with Maxime winning an award for something, (this was not understood by me,) only to have it stolen by Gru with the help of the minions. After he is successful in having Maxime sent to jail, Maxime is able to eventually break out where he tries to locate Gru and his family. Upon moving to their new home, they are forced to change their identities to limit their chances of getting caught. While Gru’s two daughters are not pleased with having to go by their new names, Gru and his wife eventually accept this. A series of comedic events result as the family tries to live out their new lives and attempt to not get caught by Maxime who is hot on their trail.

This is one of those movies that I knew nothing about before going to see it other than the fact that Gru is played by Steve Carell. Also though I don’t know much about them, the minions were my biggest draw to this film as I remember seeing them before in other movies I’ve seen. They are very likeable characters from what I’ve seen. My favourite trait of theirs is their ability to only speak gibberish as opposed to proper language as this is closely related to how I speak to Parya, (speaking in gibberish to her while only saying one word which is intended to give the meaning of the full sentence. This is what is dubbed by me as the “Parya language,” though I can now say that my inspiration for this comes from the minions.

The movie also shows scenes of how I feel in my personal life towards a certain member of my supposed family. In the beginning of this film, (though not part of the main plot which is why it was not included in the review itself,) the baby of the family is shown to dislike Gru even though Gru is his father. From a very young age, I despised my father too and I think this movie perfectly represented how I feel about my own father though how the baby treats Gru. Also, Gru sort of gives off the same impression to his kids as I do about my own father as they feel he embarrasses them and he is shown to pretty much be the loser of the family. This is exactly how I feel about my own father. There is one important difference though. By the end of this film, the baby is shown to respect Gru where for reasons which I do not want to disclose, I will never respect mine.

Given the circumstances of what I’m going through right now due to mom’s condition, I feel like I needed a good laugh. This movie provided me a lot of good laughs. Though I didn’t know what to expect from it, it was well worth it to see this movie and I would definitely recommend it.

Movie rating: 10 out of 10
